Over the past week there has been a huge focus in the media and even the geek internet culture around Charlie Sheen's supposed breakdown. He's been doing a lot of interviews, but mixed in are a lot of interesting quotes that can be applied to entrepreneurship. An entrepreneur is on a thin border between insane and brilliant.

"Defeat is not an option. CBS picked a fight with a Warlock."

Most entrepreneurs don't end up losing because of market forces or what can be attributed to specific failures. At the end of the day, entrepreneurs fail because they decide to give up and accept defeat as an option. When starting a company, Elon Musk referred to it as the equivalent of eating glass and staring into the abyss on a daily basis. From day one, you need to realize that there is nothing else you can do accept win. It may be a hard road, but complete and utter defeat is NOT an option. Take a look at Airbnb. They failed to attract any attention and failed continuously for not only days, months, but actually years. Instead of accepting defeat, they persevered and kept going. Most startups don't die due to specific circumstances, but because they commit "suicide". Here are two HIGHLY suggested links:

No one will understand what you do. They will hear the entrepreneur word and think you are crazy, broke, or some combination of all three. You have to ignore those that don't understand us. We're a crazy breed and we're special. If this were for everyone, then it wouldn't be special. As an entrepreneur you have to have thick skin and trust that it will all work out. Even when it does, you will always feel as if the respect you deserve isn't where it should be. Steve Jobs said it best with a quote that goes along the lines of "You have to be insane to do this and you have to love it. Any sane person would do what a sane person would: just quit and give up." Focus in on being different and drown out the noise. They will be fast to hate on you and they be move even faster to congratulate you.

As an entrpreneur you need to think at a level that is not from this world. Look back at the legendary Apple ad campaign about "Think Different". The rest of the world happens to be a fickle bunch. On the one hand, they want to vilify you for being an entrepeneur and take you down a level or two. On the other hand, they want something that is outside the box and pleases them. The only people capable of doing that are entrepreneurs. If what you're doing is criticized as "tame", then you are doing something very wrong. At the end of the day, you should seem as if your creation is from another planet. Your brain needs to think in a manner that is truly extra terrestrial.

"I have one speed, one gear ... go!"

There is no slow down mode when it comes to entrepreneurship. You need to be always be five steps ahead and pushing on red line. The main advantage of a startup is pure acceleration and speed. Speed in the real world is calculated by distance over time, I'll declare that startup speed is the amount you want to accomplish (alot) divided by the amount you want to focus on (a small focused portion where you have domain expertise). Accomplish something sizable and focus on what matters. Say no and cut out a lot for each version. It will let you move faster and stay in that one gear that matters: Go!

"Can't is the cancer of happen. aka I can't do it."

Yoda said it best: there is no try, there is only do or do not. As an entrepreneur, whether you made something happen is a very binary answer. Either you have made it happen or you have not. By saying "I can't do it", you are setting yourself up for failure and almost certain death. Take a look at the most successful companies in the technology sector and you will realize that "can't" is not in their DNA. The best companies defy the laws of possibility and do what many would simply throw into the "can't" category. Dream big and look for scenarios where many would say can't and make something happen.

Your product needs to be the equivalent of pure and utter magic. One of my favorite Techcrunch articles from Paul Carr is centered around this notion of technology being magic. You need to wow people, many of which you will never meet. The best products will seem like magic to most of the general population and be an escape from their normal boring lives. A few days ago someone asked me, "How does Onswipe do what it does?" and I answered back with a simple response: "Magic. We code magic."

It's not about finding celebrity trends or other silly things. It's about looking in places you would have never thought of for inspiration to make a better product and a better startup. Many of your influences will come from the startup world itself, but many will come from random offbeat sources. No matter what, just keep winning.

I remember getting this advice from my uncle, relatives and also my parents before I came in UTAR.

"Wincent, enjoy your three years university life because once you are out to work, you will not have these moments anymore."

I don't really agree with it. And now, I want to apply this in my life.

"Wincent, work hard to improve yourself and build your business during the three years of your university life because you can enjoy once you finish your studies."

Day Sat - Sun

Started my day with a headache morning, continued my day with a procrastinated afternoon by doing almost nothing. Gone through my evening Dotaing and procrastinating again.
Had dinner with Jason, Xin Hang, Alex Lee and Alvin Kk!

However, my night and midnight was complete different and really a special night for me.

1. MU won their match with a 0-4 score!! This will really influence my mood for the whole week long!

2. I remembered a video showing China building a 15 stories high Hotel in only 6 days time. This thing inspired and motivated me. I want to be someone who can really FOCUS and finished my things according to my plan in a swift seconds, while maintaining the quality of it!!!! I want to be someone like this from 27.2.2011 onwards!!! Wincent, do your best!!!

3. While I was watching MU match with Jason, Jason challenge me and asked me a question during the 80th minutes " Wincent, do you think they can get a 0-5 score in 10 minutes ar?" The score at that time was 0-1. 4 more goals to go to reach my prediction - 0-5!! I really believe in them and have faith and confidence that they will score. Eventually, they did it scoring 4 goals in the end. Although they did not get 5 goals, but I learn something here. I must really believe, believe and believe in what I am doing and DO MY BEST! Even when there is only a slim chance, it is still a chance!!! If you wasted it or just give up, means there will be no result for sure!!! So, it's NOW OR NEVER!!!!

4. Today, I learn to be someone with my own say. I started to evaluate what I do, what I think and din really follow too blindly! Decisive! This is what I want to be!

5. I must keep on reminding myself not to be arrogant or too EGO!! I have did it for 21 years and I have the confidence I can maintain it!

That's all. Let's see whether it will be my words only or really can be a reality!!!

I wrote a student comment form via UTAR portal to suggest something to UTAR. 

Okay.. To organize an activity, these are the procedures..

1. Assemble a team schedule a meeting.
2. Secretary will need to apply an attendance form from DSA (Paper + Man Power)
3. Minutes of the meeting (Paper)
4. Attendance and minutes have to be signed by advisor than bring to DSA ( Man Power)
5. Proposal and budget need to be signed by Advisor, DSA officer and DSA head. ( Paper + Man Power) and there are possibilities to be rejected if a big event.
6 Amend prosal and repeat step 5.
7. 2nd 3rd meeting repeat stpe 2 and 3.
8. Post Mortem and activity report and income statement - sign by advisor, DSA (Paper + man power)

These are some procedures needed to organize an event, basically.

As we can see, there are a lot of waste of human resource and also PAPER which is harmful to the environment in long term.

So I suggested that, they should have invested in a system where all these procedures being automated through the application of technology and internet. Everything are done online. Proposal submit online, check online , approved online. Save time and energy and most importantly save a lot of PAPERS! 

I HOPE UTAR AUTHORITIES WOULD CONSIDER MY SUGGESTIONS AND DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

Today, I chat with one of my best buddy that came to Kampar to visit me. We discuss about the economic that will boomed in the future, and which is worth investing our money and time in it. 

We did agree that land, and real estate are good choices for investment that will yield good outcome and PROFIT, of course. :) 

However, I made a point that real estate, land, shares, Forex.. All these are already the red ocean where many people are fighting for it. What I think is, a 'NEW AND HUGE' industry will come up soon, the time when we, the GenY step in to 'take over' the business world. And this INDUSTRY will be the green technology and environmental related issues. And I really do hope this INDUSTRY will come up soon. What I meant here is business men make profit and money yet the environment is taken care. I understand there are already many companies starting on this.. But, it is still not something people will think of invest in initially.

"No English, No Job"

Today I went to the library to read some news and relax myself. I went through this article "Japanese firms say No English, No Job". 

Japan, a modern country had realize the importance of English! Why is our country still have the issue to reverse the Science and Maths to our own mother tongue language .... People still refusing to accept the fact that WE NEED TO LEARN AND MASTER ENGLISH! 

In the business world or outside Malaysia, the lingua franca is English. We learn it or we won't survive! I like the mentality of the Japanese. What they say, they plan they WILL carry out! I am sure they will be stern with their decision NO ENGLISH NO JOB! And with mindset and implementation, they will be a much stronger country not long from now. 

So, Should Malaysia implement this NO ENGLISH NO JOB system since we all DO KNOW ENGLISH IS IMPORTANT to gain competitive advantages?

I admit that I am still quite weak in my opinion in English and I am still at the learning process. I will be good and perfect in English! Not long from now! This is my mission!

Secret Message hidden Behind a Simple Concept of Cooking

There are some hidden secret behind the concept of cooking?

Day: Wednesday

It Begins with.....

This concept suddenly strike my mind when I was thinking what I want to have for dinner.. 

And suddenly also, I discover some Business - Entrepreneurship Concept in my cooking before I started. Therefore, I record down the whole process! 

Firstly! I will share how to COOK A SIMPLE YET COMPLICATED MEE! 

Secondly, I will share the CONCEPT I discover here. 

FIRST PART

Step 1: Prepare the ingredients. Sadly, I only have limited ingredients at home. I only have an egg, some mushrooms, some fish cake (stole from Edison my roommate), some garlic. and Maggi mee! 

 

 

   

 

Step 2: I wash, cut the mushrooms and fish cake into smaller pieces. Next I mince the garlic into tiny bits.  

 

   

Step 3: Now! Show time! I put some water in the pan and cook the maggi mee until it is cooked. Next, I removed the water and pour the mee onto plate.

 

 

  
Step 4: CLIMAX!!!  I start to heat the pan and pour some cooking oil in it. When it had heated up, I pour in the garlic, fish cake and mushroom in it. Stir fry it for sometime... Then, I insert the mee and add the seasoning and sauces into the pan. Stir it ...... Next, I break the egg (1 hand!!!) and stir it again. 

 

 

 

  

 

 

Step 5: Its time! Its ready!!! I pour it onto another nicer plate! Its done!!!

 

    

SECOND PART

Okay.. Do you have anything in mind now? What Concept I am going to share by "COOKING" ?? Hmmm..... Wondering?

OKAY. Here comes. I always hear people say and give stupid reasons saying that I don't have enough resources to do this do that. I don't have a proper equipment, enough ingredients to do this do that.. 

So as an entrepreneurship, actually we can come out with something special, nice with creativity and innovative mind EVEN the resources are limited. We dont always have UNLIMITED RESOURCES around us when we want it. I am sure we have experience that when we want something, that thing dont come, when we dont 1 it, that thing appear! 

As for me when I am planning to cook, I dont have much ingredients and choices. But, just some slight changes, fried with some garlic, I can enjoy a better mee goreng special than just the normal maggi mee goreng!

Even with limited resources, we as future entrepreneurship must seek solution for it, with creativity, SOMETHING special will happen. Trust me trust yourself! 

AGAIN, don't blame the limitless of resources, don't blame the unfairness!

What is this? "Cloth of Life"? Where this phrase came from? Never heard of this phrase or quote before! 

This is because it is originated and created by me - EgoSky - Ch'ng Winn Shern

 

I accidentally created this 'Cloth of Life" when I was giving my speech for the speakers corner last week! 

The story started when...........

" I was giving an inspiring speech (I think I did but not sure when I inspired anyone :)) about everyone have their freeedom and choice to their own choice in their life. Out of no where, I said that every one have their own Cloth of Life and it is actually a while cloth when we were born. We have the right and freedom to choose whether to decorate our cloth of life colorfully, make it full of challenges, achievements, myriads of climax or we can choose to leave it just like how is it, dull, a few countable climax, negative thoughts...."

 

My point here is, we only live once as a human. I use this to motivate me every time I am stressed out or demotivate! This second passed will be returned to me anymore. I have to do something before I regret for not doing anything when I look back my cloth of life at the age of 70 years old. 

I will ensure that my Cloth of Life will be full of colors! I will make sure I don't mention the word 'REGRET' when I am at the age of 70! Don't live life, experience it! 

My name Ch'ng Winn Shern will be carve as the legend of the world one day! My ultimate dream!

I was having some gathering and chatting with Edison, Jason and also my new friend ShuYi at the lake side. While chatting, the wind blows... gently massaging my face... The worries and conflicts in mind dissolved in the wind.... And now, here I am again, the strong, highly motivated Ch'ng Winn Shern!

 

I am telling and promising myself, when I am financially free and my major goals in life are attained, it will be time for me enjoy and relax... I want to located all my houses at different countries that is near to nature so that I could enjoy the beauty and gorgeousness of it before the HUMAN RACE detroys it completely in the 'NEAR' future... 

NOT TO FORGET: I want to have red wine to accompany too through out the whole enjoy life process!

Actually I do not believe in luck anymore nowadays.. I belive in choice more than luck. Everything we do, everything we 'bet' on is about our choice, the choice we made bear the 'fruit'! Therefore it is not about luck but choice? Agree?

My Gambling experience:
I had some gambling experience in my life before and everytime I bet on something, I tend to lose. My little sister,Vannesa always told me that I don't have the gambling luck. Ask me not to gamble. Haha!



Sports Toto... I bought it a few times in my life.. But never hit even the consolation prize BUT at least got the 'ALMOST' experience. Actually 'ALMOST' means din kena la! Haha!



Football World Cup!!!!!
I betted for three times lost twice draw once. How sad is it ah? Haha! Again is this luck or it was my choice to pick the other team? Haha. My friend even said "Winn Shern, pls don't bet on those good teams, you are forcing them out from the world cup!!!" Lolx.



Now... Just normal gambling... During CNY....
Just like my 2010 CNY, in the beginning, I won alot, got lucky with nice cards.. So excited. After some times, started to lose lose lose until after playing so 4 hours, I lost eventually! Lolx.

I have friends who bet in football losing few thousands... Friends losing few hundred just by playing cards.... Seeing people gambling on toto but never win.. I heard a story from someone, there is man who never strike lottery aka toto in his 30++ years of trying.... even a consolation prize! Lolx.

NOW, what I hold in life is... WORK FOR WHAT YOU WANT!! Gambling is just a time wasting activity! So once again, gambling = luck? Still confusing.. A mathematician will say gambling = probability. For me as an future entrepreneur, Gambling = Trying to find a shortcut to double your wealth with a risk of LOSING IT ALL!!

Luck? Choice? Wahahahahahaha!!!
